Miniature Bull Terriers - History
The history of Miniature Bull Terriers is closely connected with the history of their large counterparts. The Miniature Bull Terrier originated from the Standard Bull Terrier in the 1800s. The Standard Bull Terrier was used in bull baiting. Breeders attempted to create a similar breed with same characteristics, yet of a more manageable size.
In the course of the history, Bull Terriers were the subject to improvement. Breeders experimented with sizes and other physical attributes. It turned out that dogs of too diminutive sizes did not display appearance characteristics of the Bull Terrier. They had apple-like heads and overly protruding eyes, which was the attribute of dwarf breeds. Meanwhile, dogs that were too large in size lacked agility, one of the most valuable qualities in the Bull Terrier.
With time, breeders succeeded in creating the Miniature Bull Terrier. They were first registered in Great Britain. The Miniature Bull Terrier Club of England appeared in 1938. Breeders continued to improve the breed. The Miniature Bull Terrier was used in fighting and became famous as a good ratter.
The AKC admitted the Miniature Bull Terrier into Miscellaneous Class in 1963. The breed was fully recognized in 1991. No interbreeding with the Standard Bull Terrier was allowed. The official AKC standard for Miniature Bull Terriers was set in 1992.
